How does Science communicate?

An open discussion based on different examples of Corona research at the LMU

Due to the Corona crisis, science has been under exceptional public scrutiny, but also more than ever is the source of high hopes and urgent expectations. In particular, the dynamic processes of investigative research, knowledge transfer, therapy development and influence on policy-making have been foci of attention. The critical role that scientific communication assumes in public interest and welfare has been magnified by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a series of short talks, three LMU expert researchers will provide insight into their respective Corona-related fields of research:
• Immunologist Prof. Dr. Veit Hornung (Gene Center LMU) will explain the relevance of his current immune system research in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic.
• The virologist Prof. Dr. Oliver T. Keppler (Max von Pettenkofer-Insitute, LMU Munich) will describe his experience as a scientist, advisor and public figure during the Corona crisis.
• Communication scientist Prof. Dr. Carsten Reinemann (Dept of Media and Communication, LMU Munich) will give insight into how scientific findings are perceived by the public, using examples of his own recent data.

Following these talks, our virtual audience will have the opportunity to discuss with the speakers the different roles and challenges for science and scientists as communicators in a society struggling to cope with and understand this far-reaching pandemic disease.

 COVID Wissenschaft 750x
