This workshop gives an introduction to Affinity Designer. A script and several exercises are provided for independent work and future references.
Affinity Designer is a fast, easy to use and powerful graphics program for editing and creating vector-based images. As a cost-effective alternative to Adobe Illustrator it offers many useful and flexible tools to generate drawings for scientific figures, posters and presentations.
In this two-day workshop you will get an in-depth look at both basic and advanced functions of Affinity Designer and learn to use the software by completing many practical examples.
The Affinity Designer course covers the following topics:
• The basic interface and tools
• Import and export of various file formats (bitmap, PDF, Excel, Adobe Illustrator, etc.)
• How to use groups, layers and artboards to create and manage complex illustrations such as figures.
• Managing colors
• Using the alignment tools, snapping function and the coordinate system to easily arrange and transform objects and draw exact illustrations
• Creating complex shapes by combining or subtracting simple objects
• Text editing and arrangement
• Assembly of poster templates
• Advanced drawing and curve editing with the pen tool and node tool
• Enhancing illustrations by using gradients, effects and transparency
• Using the brush tools to create natural looking images and complex shapes (DNA, lipid bilayer)
• Editing and arranging bitmap images (microscopic images, scans)
