Good Scientific Practice

A Refresher on Theory, Practice and Real-Life Situations

22.05.2023 – 23.05.2023

gsp wordcloudAs scientists, we are expected to follow international standards of good scientific practice (GSP), but it is often simply assumed that we are aware of these standards. Opportunities for discussion and learning (especially on sticky topics like authorship or selective data analysis) are relatively few and far-between. The tenets of GSP are neither lofty, ivory-tower concepts, nor are they black-and-white rules. They are more a blueprint, consisting of guidelines that in practice sometimes have "grey zones" and require discussion and interpretation.

This workshop, based on teachers' training content (Curriculum für Lehrveranstaltungen zur guten wissenschaftlicen Praxis, Gerlinde Sponholz, 2019) and real-life case studies, aims to raise awareness about our common values in science, to inform about global GSP standards, to learn to recognize misconduct and to discuss ways to help navigate through any grey zones.

Over the course of the 2 partial days, in interactive sessions and discussions we will address:

  • The process of science
  • Values, Good Scientific Practice
  • Who makes the rules?
  • The German standard-setter: DFG Code of Conduct

  • Mistakes, Misconduct, Fraud
  • Real-life situations and dilemmas
  • Self-reflection – why do we need this?
  • What to do (when things go wrong)

This is a safe-space workshop – any questions and real-life experiences will be handled confidentially within the workshop!

Questions to think about beforehand:

  • Are you familiar with your institution’s guidelines on good scientific practice? See if you can find them.
  • Have you or someone you know experienced what you think might be considered a breach in good scientific practice? (any examples will be modified for anonymity)
  • Do you have any questions about particular issues on scientific integrity?
